Brother Pax, a white Schnauzer in a black monastic habit and rope cincture, holds a magnifying glass and follows pawprints across sandstone cloister tiles. A nativity scene with Mary, Joseph, an ox, a donkey, and an empty manger sits under a hay roof. Stone arches and terracotta roofs fill the background, and another brother peeks from behind a pillar.

Advent at the table

A few notes for parents, guardians, teachers, and catechists. The coloring sheets can sit beside the wreath.

The Advent wreath

At dinner, many households set out a wreath with three purple candles and one rose candle. One more candle is lit each Sunday. The rose candle is for the third Sunday. An adult lights the flame. Little hands never hold the match.

Gaudete Sunday

The third Sunday of Advent takes its name from the Latin word Gaudete, which means “Rejoice.” Rose vestments may be worn at Mass, and the rose candle is lit. It is a Sunday of gladness in the middle of the wait. One sample page shows the brothers of the abbey singing.

St. Nicholas

His day is December 6. On the evening of December 5, children may set their shoes out. In the morning there may be a small gift. One sample page shows his statue at the abbey, with shoes on the floor.

Mass together

Advent is the Church’s season of waiting for the Lord. Go to Mass as a household when you can. Color the sheets at the table afterward. Mass is the heart of the season.
